The volume converter allows you to convert between different units of volume or capacity, from microscopic volumes like attoliters to very large volumes like cubic kilometers. This tool provides quick and accurate conversions between metric, imperial, and other specialized volume measurement systems for liquids, gases, and solids.

Common Measurement Systems

Metric System (SI)

The International System of Units (SI) is the modern form of the metric system and is the most widely used system of measurement globally. Base unit: cubic meter (m³) or liter (L) for volume.

  • The liter is a special name for the cubic decimeter (1 L = 1 dm³ = 0.001 m³)
  • Prefixes are used to create multiples and submultiples: kilo- (1,000), centi- (0.01), milli- (0.001), etc.
  • Common units: milliliter (mL), centiliter (cL), liter (L), kiloliter (kL), cubic meter (m³)

US Customary System

Used primarily in the United States. Based on historically standardized units.

  • Common units: fluid ounce (fl oz), cup (c), pint (pt), quart (qt), gallon (gal)
  • For dry measurements: US also has a separate dry volume system (dry pint, dry quart, etc.)
  • 1 US gallon = 128 US fluid ounces = 3.785 liters

Imperial System

Used historically in the United Kingdom and some Commonwealth countries.

  • Common units: fluid ounce, pint, quart, gallon
  • 1 Imperial gallon = 160 Imperial fluid ounces = 4.546 liters
  • Imperial units are approximately 20% larger than their US counterparts

Cubic Units

Used for measuring volumes of solids and sometimes liquids.

  • Cubic inch (in³), cubic foot (ft³), cubic yard (yd³), cubic mile (mi³)
  • Cubic millimeter (mm³), cubic centimeter (cm³), cubic meter (m³), cubic kilometer (km³)

Industry-Specific Units

Used in specific industries for specialized measurements.

  • Oil and petroleum: barrel (42 US gallons)
  • Lumber: board foot, cord
  • Agriculture: acre-foot (volume of water covering one acre to a depth of one foot)

Cooking Measurements

Common in recipes and kitchen use.

  • Tablespoon (tbsp), teaspoon (tsp), cup (c)
  • Units may vary between countries and systems
