The moment of force (also known as torque) converter allows you to convert between different units of torque, from SI units like newton meters to imperial units like pound-force feet. This tool is useful for mechanical engineering, physics, automotive applications, and many fields where torque measurements are needed. Torque is a rotational force that causes an object to rotate around an axis.
Common Torque Measurement Systems
Metric System (SI)
The International System of Units (SI) uses the newton meter (N·m) as the standard unit of torque.
- Newton meter (N·m): The torque resulting from a force of one newton applied perpendicularly at a distance of one meter from the axis of rotation
- SI prefixes can be used with the base newton: N·mm, N·cm, kN·m, MN·m, etc.
- 1 N·m = 1 joule (the SI unit of energy), although torque and energy are different physical quantities
CGS System
The Centimeter-Gram-Second system uses the dyne centimeter as its torque unit.
- Dyne centimeter (dyn·cm): The torque resulting from a force of one dyne applied at a distance of one centimeter
- 1 dyn·cm = 10⁻⁷ N·m
Imperial/US Customary System
Used primarily in the United States and a few other countries.
- Pound-force foot (lbf·ft): The torque resulting from a force of one pound-force applied at a distance of one foot
- Pound-force inch (lbf·in): The torque resulting from a force of one pound-force applied at a distance of one inch
- Ounce-force inch (ozf·in): The torque resulting from a force of one ounce-force applied at a distance of one inch
- Poundal foot (pdl·ft): The torque resulting from a force of one poundal applied at a distance of one foot
Gravitational Units
Based on the force exerted by gravity on a mass at a certain distance.
- Kilogram-force meter (kgf·m): The torque resulting from a force of one kilogram-force applied at a distance of one meter
- Gram-force centimeter (gf·cm): The torque resulting from a force of one gram-force applied at a distance of one centimeter
- Ton-force meter (tf·m): The torque resulting from a force of one ton-force applied at a distance of one meter
